Omaha Hi-Lo: General Outline

Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha 8 or better) is commonly seen as one of the most complex but well-loved poker games. It is a game that, even more than regular Omaha poker, aims for action from all levels of players. This is the main reason why a once irrelevant variation, has expanded in acceptance so rapidly.

Omaha 8 or better starts just like a regular game of Omaha. Four cards are dealt to each player. A sequence of wagering follows where players can wager, check, or fold. Three cards are given out, this is referred to as the flop. Another sequence of wagering ensues. Once all the players have either called or dropped out, a further card is revealed on the turn. Another round of betting ensues and then the river card is flipped. The gamblers must attempt to make the strongest high and low 5 card hands using the board and hole cards.

This is where some entrants often get confused. Unlike Hold’em, in which the board can make up every player’s hand, in Omaha hi/low the player has to utilize exactly three cards from the board, and exactly 2 cards from their hand. Not a single card more, no less. Unlike regular Omaha, there are 2 ways a pot may be won: the "higher hand" or the "low hand."

A high hand is exactly what it sounds like. It is the strongest hand out of everyone’s, whether that is a straight, flush, full house, etc. It’s the identical approach in almost every poker game.

A lower hand is more complicated, but really free’s up the action. When figuring out a low hand, straights and flushes do not count. A low hand is the worst hand that could be put together, with the worst being made up of A-2-3-4-5. Because straights and flushes do not count, A-2-3-4-5 is the lowest possible hand. The low hand is any 5 card hand (unpaired) with an eight and below. The low hand takes half of the pot, as just like the higher hand. When there’s no lower hand available, the higher hand wins the whole pot.

It may seem complex at the outset, following a couple of rounds you will be able to get the base subtleties of the game with ease. Since you have people betting for the low and wagering for the high, and since such a large number of cards are in play, Omaha/8 offers an exciting array of wagering options and owing to the fact that you have several players trying for the high, along with a few trying for the low hand. If you enjoy a game with all kinds of outs and actions, it is worth your time to participate in Omaha 8 or better.
