Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha/8 or better) is often times seen as one of the most difficult but favored poker variations. It’s a variation that, even more than normal Omaha poker, aims for play from every level of players. This is the primary reason why a once invisible variation, has grown in acceptance so quickly.
Omaha hi low begins exactly like a normal game of Omaha. 4 cards are given out to each player. A round of betting ensues in which gamblers can wager, check, or drop out. 3 cards are handed out, this is known as the flop. Another sequence of betting happens. After all the gamblers have in turn called or dropped out, another card is flipped on the turn. a further sequence of betting ensues and then the river card is flipped. The players must attempt to make the strongest high and low five card hands based on the board and hole cards.
This is the point where a number of players get baffled. Unlike Texas Holdem, where the board can make up every player’s hand, in Omaha hi/low the player has to utilize precisely three cards on the board, and exactly two cards from their hand. Not a single card more, no less. Unlike regular Omaha, there are two ways a pot can be won: the "higher hand" or the "low hand."
A high hand is just how it sounds. It is the best hand out of everyone’s, whether that is a straight, flush, full house, etc. It’s the identical concept in almost every poker game.
A lower hand is more complex, but really opens up the action. When figuring out a low hand, straights and flushes don’t count. the lowest hand is the worst hand that could be put together, with the worst being made up of A-2-3-4-5. Since straights and flushes don’t count, A-2-3-4-5 is the worst possible hand. The low hand is any five card hand (unpaired) with an eight and below. The low hand takes half of the pot, as does the high hand. When there is no low hand presented, the high hand takes the complete pot.
Although it seems complicated at first, after a couple of hands you will be agile enough to pick up on the base nuances of play with ease.
